What was the Strongest Dinosaur?

Strongest Dinosaur

Experts and curious people alike frequently wonder which dinosaur is the strongest in the world. There are several factors that must be fulfilled to reach a clear conclusion to this riddle. We may be able to identify the strongest dinosaur of all time, however, based on the fact that dinosaurs have lived on earth for millions of years.

However, paleontologists have tended to focus mainly on the sheer size of dinosaurs to find answers. The consensus today is that the T-Rex was not the strongest dinosaur. Did you ever wonder what other dinosaur would have been stronger than the iconic T-Rex?

T Rex and Diplodocus

Why is the T Rex considered the strongest dinosaur?

An amazing dinosaur skeleton

The name Tyrannosaurs Rex derives from the Greek words “Tyranno” which refers to evil and “Saures” which means “lizard-like”. The Latin word Rex that accompanies the name means precisely “King”. It comes to describe the qualities of arrogance, strength, size, and dexterity of the most popular dinosaur of all time. Dinosaurs, such as the T-Rex, lived on Earth about 65 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, long before the arrival of mankind. It is only through fossil remains found in North America, such as Colorado in 1874 and Wyoming in 1890, that we know about the existence of this magnificent animal. About thirty of them had almost complete skeletons.

T Rex Skeleton

Henry Fairfield Osborn gathered all the information available about the Tyrannosaurus Rex before 1905 to produce a comprehensive report on it. The name Tyrannosaurus Rex was given by the researcher himself. This report illustrates very well the impressive features that have led to the admiration and interest of one of the most popular animals on our planet. This animal is notable for its impressive dimensions. Tyrannosaurus Rex measured up to 13 meters (42 feet) long and 5 meters (16 feet) high at the hips. It had a maximum weight of 18.4 tons. However, one morphological characteristic of this species also draws attention: its head. The head measured about one and a half meters long (5 feet). A large, extremely heavy tail assisted the Tyrannosaurus Rex in finding its perfect balance.

The anatomy of an apex predator

Although his upper body was not as large as his imposing physique, his upper limbs were nevertheless very useful. In addition, the T-Rex’s sharp claws and tremendous strength allowed it to fight, destroy objects, and even join its legs when it fell on its back. It is also important to note that this animal was a therapist, which meant that it walked on its powerful hind legs. In addition to protecting your body, they allowed you to reach high speeds with your huge frame.
It has been proven that the T-Rex also ate carrion for food, which means it was indeed a carnivorous dinosaur. In the animal kingdom, it is considered to be one of the most efficient and voracious predators. It usually ate ceratopsids and hadrosaurs, as well as various other animals. Tyrannosaurus possessed excellent qualities as a hunter, such as its powerful jaws, capable of reaching a meter and a half in length. Each tooth measured about 20 centimeters in length, was sharp, curved, and about the size of a modern knife. Fortunately, we do not find this kind of reptile today, and yet some dinosaurs are still alive.

A strong dinosaur that fascinates paleontologists

In today’s scientific and cultural spheres, the T-Rex is incredibly popular. Paleontologists, geologists, naturalists, and fans of the prehistoric world have studied and analyzed this dinosaur species. However, some mysteries remain surrounding this iconic dinosaur. In view of the fact that many of its relatives had feathers on their bodies, many researchers assert that the Tyrannosaurus Rex had feathers. Nevertheless, there is a strong argument over the blood type of this dinosaur, which may have defined some of its main characteristics, such as its hunting style. Given its morphological structure, its speed is also subject to some debate. Researchers claim that Tyrannosaurus was not capable of reaching high speeds, and its maximum speed was around 17 kilometers per hour (10.5 miles per hour).

Numerous tyrannosaurus fossils found have helped to understand the behavior of this force of nature

There is no doubt that fossil remains discovered in some parts of the planet have helped researchers understand the evolutionary process of the T-Rex. Scientists have determined that this dinosaur belongs to a species known as Timurlengia euotica, which lived on earth between 80 and 60 million years ago, with a size comparable to a horse today. Timurlengia was characterized by high intelligence and sensory capacity, long, powerful hind legs with a prominent skull and sharp teeth. However, what distinguished this species most from its successor, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, was undoubtedly its size. The first tyrannosaurs did develop a considerable size over time, and the end of the Cretaceous period is where this is most evident. The fossil remains show that this species grew from 4 meters (13 feet) to 12.5 meters (41 feet) in length.

tyWhile the image of the most ferocious T-Rex has been well presented through movies and television series like Jurassic Park or Power Rangers, there were other dinosaurs that also achieved fame. Of course, the Tyrannosaurus Rex had the strength to be called “the strongest dinosaur”. Rex, a Latin word meaning “King”, reflects the kingly status it achieved due to its imposing characteristics. On the other hand, it can be explained by the fact that it was the first dinosaur with such a morphology. Henry Fairfield Osborn, president of the American Museum of Natural History, in 1905, proposed to make this animal the type of the new genus, Tyrannosaurs, because of its attitude, which far eclipses that of all terrestrial carnivorous animals known to date. Later, new finds of other species confirmed that there were indeed other, more ferocious dinosaurs, although the image and prestige of the T-Rex in the eyes of its admirers remain unchanged.

A strong opponent, the Spinosaurus!

The spinosaurus a dinosaur both marine and terrestrial

Spinosaurus

As we saw in our article on marine dinosaurs, the spinosaurus was also a force of nature with the characteristics to be the strongest dinosaur in the world.

Spinosaurus is a type of theropod dinosaur discovered in Egypt in 1912. Spinosaurus was a living nightmare. Like crocodiles of today, it could live both on land and in water. It had a thick spine on its back, which made it look much larger and more intimidating. In terms of size, its skull was a quarter of a meter longer and larger than that of the Tyrannosaurus-Rex. Similarly, the smallest adult Spinosaurus specimens were three meters taller than adult Tyrannosaurus Rex specimens. In the third Jurassic Park movie, the main dinosaur had a long snout and a large spine. It was clear that he would be able to defeat the Tyrannosaurus-Rex. However, it must be stated that this had never been accomplished. Although the T-Rex lived during the Mastrichian period of the Cretaceous, the Spinosaurs lived during the Cenomanience period of the same era. In other words, between these two stages there were about 30 to 40 million years.

A less famous but equally fearsome dinosaur

Although their fossils were discovered almost in the same period, you might be wondering why you haven’t heard much about the Spinosaurus. The time between the discovery of Tyrannosaurus (1874) and the discovery of Spinosaurus (1912) was not that long ago. Why did paleontologists not announce that Spinosaurus was the real king of dinosaurs? Since more than 100 years ago, this animal has only been mentioned in a few scientific and historical references? The answer is fairly straightforward. Even though the first Spinosaurus fossils were discovered in 1912, the first complete skeleton was only discovered in 2014. Because of this, the T-Rex dominated the dinosaur world for so long.

spinosaurus Skeleton

The spinosaurus, a dinosaur heavier, bigger and stronger than the T Rex

When compared to the Tyrannosaurus species, the Spinosaurus stood a few meters taller and weighed considerably more. Therefore, this great difference in weight between these two dinosaurs suggests that they had a greater amount of muscle and bone mass. Spinosaurus wasn’t just bigger and heavier, it was also faster and stronger. We can hypothesize that Tyrannosaurus was an inveterate predatory hunter while Spinosaurus ate small to medium-sized prey. The massive skull of the Tyrannosaurus would undoubtedly outweigh the spiny jaw of the Spinosaurus. Spinosaurus could have had a better reach to the vital parts of the T.Rex, however, the latter would have undoubtedly been able to defend itself.

What about the dinosaurs whose remains have been discovered throughout the world?

Super continent

No matter how many dinosaur fossils have been found, when we think of a species feared for its voracity and sharp teeth, we almost always refer to the T-Rex. However, a few million years before it existed, in the Triassic period, there was another fearsome three-meter specimen that lived in southwest Brazil. Gnathovorax cabreirai was the largest dinosaur of its time. In addition to being the biggest, it was the most ferocious, which put it at the top of the food chain. About 250 million years ago, this dinosaur dominated the pre-Jurassic period.

The Gnathovorax the strongest dinosaur from the Triassic

Gnathovorax

Researchers believe that Tyrannosaurus Rex and Gnathovorax would have been bitter enemies if they lived at the same time. In fact, studies have revealed some similarities between the two species. T. Rex did not appear in North America until more than 150 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period.

Rodrigo Temp Muller, a paleontologist at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil, suggests that the Gnathovorax occupied a place similar to that of lions today in the Triassic ecosystem. Paleontologists discovered traces of this sharp-clawed carnivore in the Brazilian pampas, a fertile jungle of trees, mosses and flowering plants. In 2014, a team of researchers found the best preserved and most complete articulated skeleton of Gnathovorax in existence. The discovery of this dinosaur has led to a great deal of research, not just about it, but also about life in the Triassic. In the Mesozoic era, predatory dinosaurs played a significant ecological role in terrestrial ecosystems.

In addition to learning a lot about its anatomy from the skeleton, Professor Muller and his team were able to confirm that this dinosaur was indeed bipedal because the skeleton was in such good condition. This means that it had claws that looked like fangs and walked on its hind legs. This particular animal was 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall and weighed between 70 and 80 kilograms, according to the fossil. The skull is particularly well preserved, as well as its powerful jaw, which gives the animal its name. The name Gnathovorax cabreirai means “voracious jaws”.

Gnathovorax Skeleton

In this region of Brazil, near the border with Uruguay and Argentina, in its splendid landscape of green valleys and vast plains, there are about a hundred paleontological sites, characterized by their reddish earth. These sites are crucial to understanding this time period. Rodrigo Temp Müller, a paleontologist at the Federal University of Santa Mara, was part of a team that discovered the skeletons of this ancient predator in the most preserved state. PeerJ published the presentation study of this new species, Gnathovorax cabreirai, in early November 2019. At UFSM’s Cappa, a paleontological research center in Sao Joao do Polesine, the fossil is currently on display. It includes several bones and a remarkably well-preserved head with a powerful jaw. Its teeth were large enough to eat meat. GNathovorax cabreirai is a member of the herrerasaurid lineage and is a relative of other dinosaurs of similar age found in Brazil and Argentina.

In Gnathovorax’s time, there was only one continent on the planet, called Pangea, which was located near where South America is today. Dinosaurs, which were smaller than those that appeared later in Jurassic and Cretaceous times, coexisted with other reptiles, such as Rhinosaurs and Cynodonts. Mammals descend from these species. Thousands of animals from this period were however buried and fossilized due to floods caused by sediment-laden rivers. Due to this reason, Temp Muller and his colleagues continue to conduct regular research at this site in order to learn more about Gnathovorax and other species from the same era.

Is there a stronger dinosaur than the T-Rex?

Tyrannosaurus Hunting

Many dinosaur species, even if they didn’t live in the same era as Tyrannosaurus-Rex, were more aggressive than the Tyrannosaurus-Rex, according to paleontologists. Here are a few of the most famous ones:

The Giganotosaurus, the largest dinosaur ever discovered

Giganotosaurus

Approximately 100 to 97 million years ago, in what is now Argentina, this species occupied the Earth. It is the second largest bipedal, carnivorous animal of all time, whose first remains were only discovered in 1993. Giganotosaurus stood between 12 and 13 meters (42 feet) tall and weighed between 6.5 and 13.8 tons, according to the latest research. Researchers believe that although it was a strong-legged dinosaur, its attacks were based on ambushes because of its slow speed. Its teeth were lateral flattened and serrated. The meat of its prey could be easily torn apart thanks to this characteristic.

The Carcharodontosaurus, a dinosaur with a powerful jaw

Carcharodontosaurus

Carcharodontosaurus means “shark teeth” in Latin and is named after its teeth. As you might expect, its teeth were quite long and serrated, making them ideal for hunting. During the Cretaceous period, it inhabited the Earth in the region of North Africa roughly 100 million years ago. Unlike the T-Rex, this carnivorous dinosaur could reach a height of 13 meters (42 feet), and its weight could reach 15 tons. Carcharodontosaurus, a distant relative of Giganotosaurus, had one of the largest skulls ever found. It measured up to 1.6 meters (5 feet). It should also be noted that Carcharodontosaurus is not very popular, probably due to its recent discovery. Various toy companies have used their characteristic teeth in figurines of other types of dinosaurs, however.

The Lytrhonax, the feathered dinosaur

Lythronax feathered dinosaur

It is the most recently discovered species. The first fossils of it were discovered only in 2009. The National Geographic magazine described this dinosaur as the “king of gore” (Lythronax argestes), indicating its ferocity. It was considered one of the most terrifying creatures of its time. Scientists at the Natural History Museum (NHMU) in southern Utah discovered the fossil of this dinosaur which is one of the strongest ever found. As NHMU researcher Randall Irmis explained, they wanted to name it after the Tyrannosaurus. The new species of T-Rex was named Lythronax by Andrey Atuchin, who thought the name should be equally evocative. Consequently, it is highly probable that this new species was about 8 meters long (26 feet) and weighed about 2.5 tons. Lythronax shows evidence of evolution dating back at least 80 million years.

The Allosaurus, one of the strongest dinosaur of the planet

Allosaurus

The average height of this dinosaur was 8 meters (26 feet), and it weighed almost 2.5 tons. It can also be referred to as one of the strongest dinosaurs on Earth. Its strength was due to its great resistance, which came from the muscles in its skull and neck. The skull of this creature is estimated to be able to withstand forces of up to 55500 Newtons. In order to slaughter its prey, it used its skull and neck as an attack weapon.

The Carnotaurus, the powerful dinosaur with a strong skull

Carnotaurus

Carnotaurus was essentially a very strong dinosaur. Research indicates that its skull was designed to withstand large forces or pressures. Therefore, it would have been able to smash through anything. So many researchers point out that it devoured large dinosaurs and fed on them, with a bite force twice as great as the American crocodile.

After reading this article you should have an idea of what the strongest dinosaur of prehistoric times is. However, keep in mind that new fossil discoveries are made every year and that at any moment an even stronger dinosaur can be discovered.

Spinosaurus was NOT stronger than t-rex. T-rex was smarter, stronger, heavier and bulkier than spino and would beat a spino in a fight

Tyrannosaurus Rex is the most powerful land predator of all time. If both specimens were in peak condition, the Spinosaurus would lose it’s head to a T-Rex.

    1. Size: The Tyrannosaurus Rex (T Rex) is widely regarded as one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs that ever lived. Adult T Rex individuals are estimated to have reached lengths of up to 40 feet and stood about 15 to 20 feet tall at the hips. On the other hand, the size of the spinosaurus is somewhat controversial, but it is generally believed to have been slightly larger than the T Rex, with some estimates suggesting a length of around 45-50 feet. However, there is no substantial evidence to support that the spinosaurus was significantly bigger or heavier than the T Rex.

    2. Weight: Estimating the weight of extinct animals is challenging and often subject to revision as new information becomes available. The weight of a T Rex is estimated to be around 7-9 tons (14,000-18,000 pounds). Again, there is limited data available for accurately estimating the weight of a spinosaurus. However, current estimates suggest a range between 6-9 tons (12,000-18,000 pounds), which is comparable to or slightly less than that of a T Rex.

    3. Strength: Assessing the strength of dinosaurs is even more challenging due to limited fossil evidence. Strength can be measured in various ways such as bite force or muscle mass, but these parameters are difficult to determine accurately for extinct species. While both the T Rex and spinosaurus were formidable predators, it is inaccurate to claim that one was definitively stronger than the other based on current scientific knowledge.

Considering these factors, it seems highly unlikely that the spinosaurus was heavier, bigger, and stronger than the T Rex in 2023. The available evidence and scientific consensus do not support such a claim.
